Our Charity Shop
Our charity shop on Welwyn High Street is the centerpiece of our fund-raising efforts.
Over the years the shop has used various premises, but wherever it has been, our Managers, Brian and Heather, have created something of a focal-point for the village. Both now serving with us for more than 25 years, they have always brought warm and friendly charm that continues to draw in customers from near and far. Their special talents have twice been recognised by winning one of the annual village ‘Oscars’ for the best-run shop in Welwyn.
In 2012 our esteemed manager, Brian, went to Buckingham Palace when he was awarded the OBE for his lifetime of services to the village, from both managing the shop and leading the Welwyn Wailers, the local choral and amateur dramatics group.
The Shop is indeed a treasure trove for bargain-hunters; you never know what nuggets may be found. Is that old violin even playable? (Yes, very much so after some expert restoration). Are those medals rare and valuable? (Yes!) Is that Hublot watch genuine? (Well, we never were quite sure!).
We rely entirely on donated goods including clothes for both everyday and special occasions, children’s toys, bric-a-brac and antiques, books, pictures and jewellery. There is a never-ending supply of ladies’ clothing – and men’s – always at bargain prices and often practically new, ranging from high fashion to more everyday styles. Or you may like to browse our wide range of books, DVDs and CDs, with new titles coming in all the time. Apart from the Managers, our shop is staffed entirely by volunteers many of whom have been actively involved since it first opened.
Of course none of this happens without the support of our Relief Manager, Georgia, together with a large team of volunteers who come in to sort and price all the donations. Georgia has created some brilliant and dramatic window displays for us recently, especially those for Remembrance Day, Christmas, and Easter.
We also have an eBay shop which sells some of our more exquisite items, our online shop is update regularly so do have a look for that something special.
